C.W. Naeser is a retired US Geological Survey geologist.  He received A.B. and M.A. degrees in geology from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in nuclear geology from Southern Methodist University. In the summer of 1964, he was employed by the Research Laboratory of the General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York, where he learned fission-track analysis from Robert Fleischer, Buford Price, and Robert Walker, the discoverers of this new dating technique. He worked for 38 years at the USGS in Menlo Park, California, Denver, Colorado, and Reston, Virginia, developing new procedures and new geologic applications and applying this new dating technique to many different geologic problems. Among those problems were the dating of volcanic ashes in sedimentary rocks, the discovery of hidden ore deposits, and dating the uplift of mountain ranges. He is the author or co-author of over 200 scientific reports, abstracts, and maps. He was a friend and colleague of Rep both in Menlo Park and later, when Rep transferred to Denver.
